Truck & Bus Regulation

Lighter Vehicle Requirements

If any of your vehicles are lighter duty (14,000 - 26,000 lbs. GVWR), below are the requirements:

CARB reporting is not necessary. Record-keeping is required.
The deadline to retrofit with a particulate filter has passed as of 1/1/2014.
Lighter duty vehicles must be replaced with a 2010 model year engine as follows:

Engine Model Year Replace with 2010 engine
1995 & older By January 1, 2015
1996 By January 1, 2016
1997 By January 1, 2017
1998 By January 1, 2018
1999 By January 1, 2019
2000-2003 By January 1, 2020
2004-2006 By January 1, 2021
2007-2009 By January 1, 2023

PM filter retrofits cannot be used to comply with this option; however, owners that installed a PM filter retrofit on a lighter truck by January 1, 2014 and reported by January 31, 2014 can continue to operate the vehicle until January 1, 2023.

Identifying Lighter Vehicles

Identify your lighter vehicles by looking at the GVWR. This rating is usually on your truck's door. See example.

The weight use for this regulation is not the registered weight rating or the gross combined weight rating only the Gross Vehicle Weigt Rating may be used.
